Earth burns.

We call them the scum. They came from deep space. Creatures of claws and endless malice, they ravage the world.

As the war flares, as cities crumble, Private Marco Emery and his platoon blast into space. They won one battle on Earth. Their next battle must be fought in the darkness.

The scum will not rest until the last human is dead. Marco and his friends must defeat them. They must win. Or Earth will fall.

Earth Lost Earthrise Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Daniel Arenson Jeffrey Kafer Audible Studios Books

I have given this series 5 stars because I read the whole thing and enjoyed it greatly. It has all of the the standard space opera devices: a means of defeating known space-time physics, overcoming and controlling gravity, super powered energy sources, super weapons, uncanny robots etc. It also contains horror scenes worthy of Poe or Lovecraft, fairy tail elements, magic, ghosts, telepathy, mind control, time travel and transcendental meditation. (What? No telekinesis?) The series of nine books covers a future period of 14 years. It is divided into three trilogies. Each trilogy relates attacks on earth by a different species, Scum, Marauders and Grays. These vicious aliens relish eating raw human flesh, torturing humans and conducting Mengele like genetic and surgical experiments. Myriads of less violent, even lovable, species make appearances. There are four main characters: Marco, Addy, Einav, and Lailani and many lesser characters. They are well drawn. There is also a lovable doberman and a winsome robot named Hobbes. While the earth is embroiled in seemingly hopeless military actions on planet and in space. The main characters become draftees in earths military, and engage in military actions against terrible odds. They accomplish heroic deeds and as a result are sometimes revered, sometimes reviled and sometimes cast adrift, ignored by those that they fought to protect. Between wars they seek normal lives and love. They fall on hard times and recover. There are interesting twists, humor, betrayal and intrigue throughout.

Earth Lost Earthrise Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Daniel Arenson Jeffrey Kafer Audible Studios Books Reviews

It's rare for me to find a book series that draws me in so completely, but Arenson has done it masterfully. I truly care about the characters, and feel like I'm standing right beside them, going through everything with them.

It's such a compelling narrative. You watch these characters train, learn, and grow. The story doesn't start with action, it starts with training. You get to experience the fights from start to finish with the characters instead of simply reading about what they do.
I gave the first book the benefit of the doubt and figured maybe the next book would get better. While it was a gripping story and darker than the nether regions of hell, I think I'm going to have to stop here. The characters who were so critical to the first book and the comradery between them have been shed like a dog's winter fur. The remaining characters just annoy me. Not mentioning names as I don't want to spoil the story for those who want to read it.
A continuation of the first book it once again began slowly. But it did not take long for Mr. Arenson put his foot to the metal as the gang from boot camp go into space to begin their battle against the evil scum (hell of a name for an alien). The ship receives an SOS from a mining colony which produces azoth (the energy for hyperspace) only to find a deserted planet after their ship crashed. To their horror, the planet is swarming with scum and a saboteur who destroys the important components of the ship. They started there search for azoth only to find themselves in a battle of life and death.
I stopped reading somewhere in the mines, and I don't think I'll return, pity. The Humanity vs. Scum war is a good setting. After book 1 I hoped the next books would pick up the pace, but instead it slowed down even more, and eventually you get to be as depressed as the characters in the story. Why the relentless focus on creating such a gloomy atmosphere ? For me it simply does not belong in a space opera with plasma rifles and azoth crystals and insectoid aliens. I also got a bit bored by the somewhat repetitive and shallow description of the main characters. How many times do you need to be told that Lailani is the daughter of a prostitute in Manila, was abused and ate out of garbage cans, but not a single bit of additional background is given thereafter. Same for Beast, the gay Russian bodybuilder from New York, what else ?? Anyway, sorry, but I'm more of a B.V. Larson fan - epic, fast paced military space opera without pretention but with great adventures.
Daniel Arenson has written another fine SF story. Marco and his friends take on a massive enemy and succeed in their mission with deeds of splendour. My own combat missions did not allow for such massive ammo/munitions expenditure, but hell, this book is in a different realm of capabilities and it fits the expanded cosmos. Read this book.
Mr. Arenson continues forth in the same vein of the Earth Rising series he started in book one. The same main characters as in the first but there is a significant loss of well developed characters from the first volume. Pity, because I liked most of them and hoped that they would all be live heroes instead of dead ones. But the story is centered around the eradication of the deadliest and chillingly horrible wormy enemy he could possibly invent.
I love the continuity in story from book 1 to this. I love the action. I love the fact that nobody, aside from the main character, is safe. I love the horror. I love the heroism.
I absolutely hate the main character. It's a good story despite him. I was compelled to write this review, just because I want others to know what a schmuck I think he is. He is the most forgiving character ever. You could nail his wife, shoot his dog, steal his car, and kick him square in the Jimmy, and he'd be like, "I see the good inside you!" It's like putting Ghandi in charge of the Avengers, except a far kinder, gentler Ghandi, in charge of an Avengers made up of only enraged Hulks. I'm going to keep reading this series to see what this idiot does. Oh, and now he has a puppy.
