A Womans Love Letters J. Selwin Tait and Sons, Sophia M, Almon Hensley 9781140537656 Books Reviews

Some of the sweetest words written to a lover. I am a poet & I hope to have my words read in such a pleasant light as I've felt for this woman's words
"If I had known
That I should be
to-day deaf to all
happy birds
I would have lain for
hours to listen to your words"

Sophia Margaret Hensley (1866-1913) seems to have published her book "A Woman's Love Letters" in 1895. While I can find her book all over the Internet I have to wonder why no one has reviewed any of her books at . I'd love to know more about this mysterious Canadian author who wrote some beautiful poems. Yes, this is a book of poetry, not love letters.

"I deemed that he who
held my heart in thrall
Must love me "passionately" or not
"at all."

Throughout her poems she seems to have one particular man in mind. But who
is this person who so captivates her heart? Is it a forbidden love or someone she
eventually married?

While she does talk of love quite often she also was an adventurous woman who
wanted to stand on a hilltop and to face a "gathering gale." She seems to speak
of nature in a way that indicates she is talking about so much more. Perhaps in
this case her need for passion. There are also other moments where she is wandering
through fields of flowers lost in a romantic haze.

"I long to taste my
pleasure through thy
lips."

The poem "Incompleteness" was my favorite. I also liked her idea that "love is the best pleasure." She also writes beautifully about the sea. I found this book quite by accident and I'm glad I did. These poems are worth reading over and over again. They have a rare beauty.
